History
Mount Olivet Cemetery was established in 1908 when Father Francis F. Kelly of Ascension Parish in North Tonawanda purchased 50 acres of land on Delaware Avenue to serve the growing Catholic population of the northern suburbs. In 1923, an additional 62 acres were added to expand the cemetery.
The cemetery was consecrated by Bishop Charles H. Colton on October 11, 1908. Mount Olivet later became the site of Catholic Cemeteries’ first mausoleum project. The Holy Family Mausoleum, dedicated by Bishop Edward D. Head in September 1979, now stands along the cemetery’s central mall.
Today, Mount Olivet Cemetery is the resting place of more than 50,000 individuals, with approximately 12 acres of undeveloped land reserved for future use. Bishop William Turner is buried near the original chapel, along with many priests of the Diocese. The cemetery also features a monument honoring Bishop John A. Duffy, the seventh Bishop of Buffalo (1937–1944).
