The following guidelines help maintain a safe, respectful, and well-kept cemetery for everyone.
Full Burial Guidelines are available at our cemetery offices
- The purchaser of a plot in Catholic Cemeteries does not acquire the property itself, but only the "right of burial".
- No interment will be permitted in the cemetery, or rights acquired by the purchaser, until such time that full payment has been received for the plot.
- The interment fee is separate and distinct from the purchase of the "Right of Burial". This fee must be paid in full prior to the interment.
- Grave spaces may be used for the burial of human remains only (with an allowance for pets). Normally, a maximum of one interment or two inurnments (cremated remains) is permitted in a single grave. If space permits and at the discretion of the Cemetery, a family may purchase an additional "Right of Burial" for cremated remains to be placed in a single grave where one interment or two inurnments has taken place.
- Since Catholic Cemeteries is a Catholic Institution, it is customary that interments are provided for Catholics. As a sign of the bonds of family unity, non-Catholics may be buried in a Catholic cemetery alongside the Catholic members of the family.
- Assignment or transfer of any plot will at all times be subject to the guidelines of Catholic Cemeteries. No burial space or interest therein will be transferred or assigned without the consent of Catholic Cemeteries. A notarized statement indicating permission of the original purchaser and/or his/her heir(s) is required. A recording fee may be charged to provide this service.
- The purchaser of a crypt/niche in Catholic Cemeteries does not acquire the property itself, but only the "right of burial".
- No entombment/inurnment will be permitted in the mausoleum, or rights acquired by the purchaser, until such time that full payment has been received for the crypt/niche.
- The entombment fee and the charge for lettering on the crypt front are separate and distinct from the purchase of the "right of burial". These fees must be paid in full prior to the entombment.
- Crypts and niches may be used for the burial of human remains only (with an allowance for pets). Normally, a maximum of one entombment or two inurnments (cremated remains) will be permitted in a single crypt space. Where there is one entombment or two inurnments in a single crypt space and at the discretion of the Cemetery, the family may purchase an additional "Right of Burial" for cremated remains to also be placed in that crypt. Certain restrictions will apply. Only one inurnment can be placed in a single niche.
- Since Catholic Cemeteries is a Catholic Institution, it is customary that interments are provided for Catholics. As a sign of the bonds of family unity, non-Catholics may be buried in a Catholic cemetery alongside the Catholic members of the family.
- Ground spaces in any of our cemeteries may be exchanged as partial payment on mausoleum crypts with the approval of Catholic Cemeteries. A release form for the graves exchanged must be signed by the purchaser (plot holder) and the easement (deed/title) to the ground property must be returned to the cemetery.
- If the ground space to be exchanged is already occupied, the exchange can take place, after the proper disinterment forms have been completed. A separate fee will be charged for the disinterment and entombment. In addition, a special cemetery approved liner must be purchased. Other expenses, not directly assessed by Catholic Cemeteries, may also be incurred at the time of transfer.
- Assignment or transfer of any crypt space will at all times be subject to the guidelines established by Catholic Cemeteries. No crypt or interest therein will be transferred or assigned without the consent of Catholic Cemeteries. A notarized statement indicating permission of the original purchaser and/or his/her heir(s) is required. A recording fee will be charged to provide this service.
- Lettering and inscription on all crypt fronts are to be uniform as determined by Catholic Cemeteries. After full payment has been received for the crypt space(s), lettering may be ordered and placed on the crypt front.
The purchaser of a crypt, niche, or grave does not acquire ownership of the property itself, but only the “Right of Burial.”
A Second Rite of Burial, often referred to as an additional right of interment or second interment, occurs when cremated remains are buried in a grave that has already been used for a previous burial.
No burial will be permitted, and no rights will be granted, until full payment for the burial space has been received.
Burial fees and memorialization charges are separate from the purchase of the “Right of Burial.” The burial fee must be paid in full prior to interment.
Burial spaces are for human remains only (with an allowance for pets). A grave or crypt may accommodate one full body or two cremated remains. If space allows and at the discretion of the Cemetery, additional “Rights of Inurnment” may be purchased for cremated remains. Normally, a maximum of one full body and two cremated remains are permitted in a single crypt or grave. Only one inurnment is permitted in a single niche.
Burial spaces may be exchanged as partial payment toward other burial spaces with Cemetery approval. A release form must be signed by the purchaser, and the original easement must be returned to the Cemetery.
Disinterment or disentombment requires a court order. A separate fee will apply for the disinterment/disentombment and subsequent interment/entombment. If a body is placed in a crypt, a special liner must be purchased from the Cemetery. Additional expenses not directly assessed by the Cemetery may also apply.
Any assignment or transfer of burial space is subject to Cemetery guidelines. No crypt, niche, or interest may be transferred without Cemetery consent. A notarized statement from the original purchaser and/or heirs is required. A recording fee will apply.
The Cemetery grounds are open daily from dawn until dusk.
The main mausoleum doors open automatically each day from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
When a grave has been top-soiled and seeded, it is the responsibility of the family to water it.
Inscriptions on all crypt/niche fronts are to be uniform as determined by the Cemetery. After full payment is received for the crypt/niche space(s), including the inscription fee, the inscription may be ordered and placed on the crypt/niche front.
- Graves must be paid in full before a memorial may be placed.
- The size, style and number of lawn level memorials will be determined by the section of the Cemetery and size of the grave on which they are to be placed.
- In keeping with Christian ideals, a Christian character or emblem will be the main feature on all memorials. Prayers and Epitaphs of a positive nature, may be permitted with Cemetery approval, and must be of limited wording.
- Etchings of nature scenes may not exceed 25% of the face of the die. Etchings of the bust of an individual may not exceed 10% of the face of the die with a maximum of 80 square inches. Etchings of any other kind are limited to 4”x 4” or 16 square inches.
If, in the sole discretion of the Cemetery, a crypt/ niche/grave can be utilized by the Cemetery, it may be returned under the following conditions:
- You must be the original purchaser; no Power of Attorney will be accepted.
- The burial space to be returned is not marked with a family or individual memorial. Any existing memorialization must be removed prior to the return, at the family’s expense.
- Proper notarized documents must be submitted to the Cemetery.
- If a burial is returned to the Cemetery, a retainage fee will be imposed for all returns.
Catholic cemeteries will now allow the burial of domestic pets with their owner(s). Any animal that has been adapted or tamed to live in intimate association with people is considered a domestic pet.
Rules and regulations have been set by New York State, to govern these burials.
